William Gossage, besides being a soap & alkali manufacturer he was also a prolific inventor and was also one of the first employers to be concerned about the health and welfare of his workers.

These men who enter the chambers in which chlorine gas is turned on lime, breathe through twenty-four thicknesses of flannel and wear goggles and calico clothing, round which brown paper is wrapped tightly. They earn good wages for easy hours but are generally short-lived.
