SAINT HELEN'S AND RUNCORN GAP RAILWAY.
King George IV. Royal Assent dated 29th May, 1830.

The act authorizing the execution of the above works received King’s assent on the 29th May, 1830, and is entitled, 'An Act for making a Railway from the Cowley Hill Colliery, in the parish Prescot, to Runcorn Gap, in the same parish, with several branches therefrom, all in the county palatine of Lancaster, and for constructing a Wet Dock at the termination of the said Railway at Runcorn Gap aforesaid.'

A mixed goods train heads north from Widnes Dock and is seen passing through the site of Runcorn Gap Station in the mid 1960s.

Looking towards Appleton and St Helens. The train is going South West off the ex-LNW line (original St Helens & Runcorn Gap Railway and closed to passengers from 18/7/51) and is heading for Spike Island Sidings. The line forking left had been the 'normal' line through Widnes South (ex-LNW) station (closed to passengers 10/9/62).
